A good secret is a surprise that will make someone happy.

A bad secret is one that makes you feel scared, or ashamed, or that asks you to protect a grown-up when something feels wrong, and those you never have to keep, no matter who asks, no matter how much you love them.

If every child in the world knew that one rule, in their bones, the way my son now knows it, a great deal of the harm done to children in secret would have nowhere left to hide.

My son paid for that knowledge.
