PART 1 — THE BLUE FOLDER

Ms.

Harrow held Clara’s blue folder in one hand and tapped the first page with her finger.

“Passive alert,” she read.

“Kennel master.

Certification.

Four stitches.”

Clara stood beside her desk with both shoes pressed flat against the floor.

Twenty-two children watched from their desks, waiting for her to explain the part about Scout.

“The passive alert is when Scout tells Ben he found the training odor without touching it,” Clara said.

Ms.

Harrow looked down at the page again.

“Scout is a military working dog?”

“Yes.”

“And you say his handler is your father?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Ms.

Harrow turned another page.

The paper made a dry sound as she lifted it.
