She had made my brave, exhausted little girl into an unwilling accomplice to her own neglect, and had counted on the child’s love and fear to keep the secret.

That was the moment I stopped being angry, exactly, and became something colder and more useful.

That was the moment I began, without quite deciding to, to build the case.

And I want to say something about that choice — the choice to build a case rather than to explode — because it is the thing I am most quietly proud of from that whole afternoon, and it did not come naturally, and it is a thing I learned from fifteen years with dangerous animals.

Every instinct in my body, in that moment, wanted to erupt.
