Chapter 11 — No Bodies, No Disappearances

Brenda had arrived with a state investigator by then, drawn by the greenhouse footage, and Samantha looked at the two of them from her hospital bed, and then at me, and she said the thing that saved my soul as surely as I had saved her life.

“No bodies,” she said.

“No disappearances.

I want them alive, and I want them free to watch everything they care about be taken from them in a courtroom, in daylight, with their names in the paper.

I don’t want them afraid of the dark.
