Rebecca Hale — The Second Ledger
I stood there remembering the woman I’d been when I read the words live-in woman wanted to cook and keep house.
I had been afraid to hope.
I had imagined any stranger who learned about my conviction would send me away.
Instead, Opal had opened her door and asked whether I could cook.
I bought a loaf of bread and a jar of jam.
On my way out I noticed a new handwritten flyer offering volunteer help for people seeking work after incarceration.
I took a picture of the number and later called to ask whether they needed bookkeeping assistance.
