Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I turned my back on my mother and faced the two corporate attorneys directly.
“Get out of this room right now,” I ordered coldly.
The senior attorney looked at my mother for direction.
She gave a short, subtle nod.
“We’ll wait down in the main lobby,” the attorney said quietly.
Before turning to leave, my mother looked at me one last time.
“Your father has scheduled the final transition meeting for eight o’clock tomorrow morning,” she told me.
“I know about the meeting,” I replied.
