Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Then we’ll have clear proof that your family found the trust first,” she said plainly.
Nurse Florence stepped over to the bedside and gently tucked the light blanket around Sylvia’s shoulders.
“The attending physician needs you to get some rest now, Sylvia,” Florence reminded her gently.
Sylvia nodded in agreement, then turned her attention back to me.
“Don’t go out to the estate alone tonight,” she advised strongly.
“Who else could I possibly take?” I asked.
“Take someone you can actually trust,” she suggested softly.
