Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
A cold wave of clarity washed over me.
“How could you possibly know about my mother sending private security?” I asked sharply.
“Because I’m the one who let them through the main security gate,” Marcus admitted weakly.
Sylvia sat straight up in her hospital bed despite her discomfort.
I moved closer to her bedside and covered the phone’s microphone with my hand.
“What were those men looking for on the property?” I asked Marcus.
“I honestly don’t know!” he claimed frantically.
