Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“You watched them go into the caretaker’s house yourself!” I said sharply.
“I stayed outside near the gate the whole time!” he argued defensively.
“Then why did you help them in the first place?” I demanded.
“Because your father told me the estate held confidential company documents that needed to be secured!” Marcus explained desperately.
“Did the property actually have corporate documents?” I pressed.
“I don’t know!” he repeated weakly.
“Did you see the hidden entrance to the quiet room?” I asked directly.
Marcus gave no immediate answer.
