Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Instead, I looked at her and said, “I’ll come back as soon as I have the answers.”
She didn’t turn her head to look at me.
“Come back only when you’re carrying the whole truth,” she said softly.
I stepped out into the quiet hospital corridor.
Nurse Florence walked beside me down the hallway toward the central nurses’ station.
“Mr.
Montgomery,” she called softly as we reached her desk.
I stopped and turned to face her.
