Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Florence reached under the high counter and brought out a thick, sealed parchment envelope.
“This package was personally delivered for Sylvia about six months ago,” Florence revealed softly.
“She specifically asked me to keep it safe unless you eventually showed up at the hospital.”
I took the heavy envelope from her hands.
There was no return address or name on the front, only an elegant embossed symbol pressed into dark red wax.
The symbol showed a grand oak tree inside a perfect circle.
“Why didn’t you give this package to Sylvia when she arrived tonight?” I asked, curious.
