Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“A watchful eye on what?” I asked, my mind racing.
Nurse Florence glanced down the long hallway toward Room 418.
“Not on something, Alexander,” she corrected gently.
Her clear eyes came back to mine, full of deep emotion.
“On someone,” she clarified quietly.
I waited in total silence for her to explain her mysterious words.
She chose not to say anything more.
Instead, she simply said, “Don’t break that seal until you’re physically standing inside the quiet room.”
