Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“He called me into his office and warned me that if I wanted to keep my well-paid position and my career, I would forget the whole thing had ever happened.”
I carefully folded the plan back up.
“And you chose to follow his orders without a second thought,” I said coldly.
“Yes, I did,” Marcus admitted quietly, offering no excuse for his cowardice.
“Why have you suddenly decided to help me tonight?” I asked plainly.
Marcus looked toward the garage entrance, his eyes full of real regret.
“Because I saw Sylvia’s name on that emergency guardianship petition this afternoon,” he revealed softly.
“You read the petition?” I asked, surprised.
