Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I stood still and waited for her to go on.
“Your mother called the main desk on this floor about twenty minutes ago,” Florence told me.
An icy feeling returned to my stomach at the mention of my mother.
“What did my mother say to the staff?” I asked tightly.
“She specifically asked whether Sylvia had delivered the babies yet,” Florence revealed.
That detail alone was deeply troubling, because it meant my mother had been keeping track of Sylvia’s whereabouts without my knowledge.
But the dark look on Nurse Florence’s face told me there was even more.
