Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I walked slowly over to the desk.
A heavy parchment envelope lay on the polished dark wood, with my name written across the front in faded black ink.
Alexander Elias Montgomery.
The distinctive handwriting was impossible to mistake.
I gently touched the cool paper before trying to open it.
“Why did you keep this letter away from me for so many years?” I asked softly.
“I never kept it away from you, Alexander,” Evelyn corrected gently.
“I tried several times to put it directly into your hands.”
