Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Sylvia told me you sent copies to the hospital,” I said.
“I sent verified copies to three specific people,” Evelyn explained.
“To Nurse Florence, to Sylvia, and directly to Marcus Vance.”
Marcus looked up in total shock and confusion.
“I swear on my life I never got a copy of that letter!” Marcus blurted out anxiously.
“You were sent it, Marcus,” Evelyn corrected coldly.
“Your father’s executive team intercepted the parcel before it ever reached your desk.”
I carefully broke the seal of the parchment envelope and took out a single sheet of heavy paper folded in thirds.
