Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Sylvia’s fingers tightened on her white hospital blanket.
“And what about our newborn sons?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
“I’m going to formally acknowledge that I’m their father in court today,” I said clearly.
“I’ll give you full, unconditional financial and personal support for whatever you and the boys need.
But I promise you I will never use that support as leverage to control your life.”
She stared at me for a long, silent moment, searching my face.
“Do you really understand how much you’re promising me right now?” she asked softly.
