Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“I’m promising to show up consistently, to tell the whole truth, and to respect your boundaries when you say no,” I laid out clearly.
Tears welled up in her eyes, though she wouldn’t let them fall.
“Those are very heavy promises to make, Alexander,” she said softly.
“I know exactly how heavy they are,” I agreed gently.
“They’re certainly not romantic promises,” she noted with a faint touch of irony.
“I’m not standing here foolishly asking you to jump back into a marriage with me,” I said plainly.
Those words cost me a great deal of pride, but they needed to be said.
