Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I clearly remembered her whispering, “One day, Alexander, you’ll finally understand why I had to let you hate me.”
At the time, I had brushed off her words as a manipulative attempt to keep up an air of tragic mystery.
Standing in the dim light of the recovery room, those words sounded like a solemn promise.
Her eyes fluttered open before I had a chance to say anything.
She looked straight at me, and her guarded composure cracked just enough for me to see the enormous pain she had been carrying alone.
“You actually came,” she whispered, her voice rough with exhaustion.
