Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I stayed standing near the closed door, keeping my distance.
“You had someone call me,” I answered quietly.
Her tired eyes moved down to my right hand.
“Nurse Florence gave you the brass key, didn’t she?” Sylvia asked weakly.
“Yes, she gave it to me just outside,” I confirmed.
For a long moment, neither of us dared to bring up the newborns.
The heavy silence between us was full of seven long months of unasked questions and unhealed wounds.
“You were pregnant when we signed the final divorce papers,” I said, bringing the truth out into the open.
