Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
On the afternoon the boys were cleared to go home, Nurse Florence met us near the hospital’s main exit.
She wore her crisp navy uniform and held her clipboard, but her sharp face showed a quiet, deep satisfaction.
“Your twin boys are completely ready to face the world,” Florence announced warmly.
Sylvia carefully held Julian in her arms, while I carried Oliver securely in his car seat, checking the safety straps three times.
Nurse Florence reached out and gently touched the edge of Oliver’s blanket.
“Your late grandfather would have been enormously proud of both of these young men,” Florence said softly.
