Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“My parents had nothing to do with the problems in our marriage,” I insisted firmly.
She looked back at me with a sad, knowing expression.
“Your parents had everything to do with why our marriage was destroyed, Alexander,” she replied quietly.
I took a few more steps into the room, moving toward the bed.
“That’s a very serious accusation to make,” I warned her.
“I know exactly how serious it is,” she answered steadily.
“Then explain it to me right now,” I demanded, needing answers.
“I plan to explain everything, but not while you stand over my bed like a prosecutor,” she said calmly.
