Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Her words stung, because I realized I really was treating her like a suspect rather than someone who had just given birth.
I pulled the uncomfortable plastic visitor’s chair closer to her bed and sat down.
Sylvia studied my tired face for a moment.
“You look like you’ve aged several years,” she remarked softly.
“And you look completely worn out,” I replied, my tone softening a little.
“I’m beyond worn out,” she admitted with a faint breath.
“Are the boys really going to be all right?” I asked, real concern taking over.
Her guarded manner disappeared instantly, replaced by an expression of pure, unfiltered tenderness.
