Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
She glanced down the quiet corridor toward a closed wooden door near the end of the hall.
“They’re both inside Sylvia’s room right now,” she explained gently.
A strange, icy feeling spread through my chest as I took in her words.
“What exactly are you trying to tell me?” I pressed, needing a clear answer.
Nurse Florence took a small step toward me so her voice would stay low.
“Before you walk through that door, you need to understand something very important, Alexander.
Your ex-wife didn’t come to this hospital tonight asking for your money, because she came here in active labor.”
