Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“It was never meant to make big profits, Alexander,” she pointed out gently.
“Why would anyone bother tampering with a charitable division?” I asked, honestly confused.
“Because that charitable division quietly held the titles to huge tracts of valuable real estate,” she revealed softly.
I stood completely still and stared at her.
Sylvia’s voice fell to a quiet whisper.
“Valuable real estate that your father was quietly moving into private offshore shell companies,” she added.
“That’s completely absurd,” I replied automatically, defending my father.
