Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I had given her a quick, dismissive corporate answer: “I’d demand absolute proof before accusing family.”
She had looked down at her glass and whispered, “What if presenting that proof destroys the family forever?”
I had told her she was being overly dramatic and mysterious, and we had dropped the subject completely.
Now, a heavy weight pressed on my chest as I realized what she had been trying to do.
“What happened right after that dinner?” I asked quietly.
“The very next morning, my security access was revoked across the board,” she revealed.
