Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
I frowned deeply at what she said.
“HR officially told me you had handed in a voluntary resignation,” I countered.
“I never wrote or submitted a resignation letter, Alexander,” she said firmly.
“A signed resignation letter was put directly into your personnel file,” I insisted.
“That letter was a complete fake,” she answered steadily.
I got up from the chair and walked to the window, staring out into the dark night.
The city lights below looked distant and peaceful, completely cut off from the storm inside the room.
