Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“The rest of the names are laid out in the records inside the trust,” she answered carefully.
The brass key in my pocket suddenly felt very heavy against my leg.
“Why pull me into this whole mess tonight after seven months of total silence?” I asked, watching her closely.
“Because the locked trust can only be legally opened by a direct Montgomery heir,” she explained plainly.
“That still doesn’t explain why you called me here tonight,” I pointed out.
“It explains everything once you understand what your father plans to carry out tomorrow morning,” she replied sharply.
