Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Why would my grandfather specifically include a requirement for the spouse?” I asked, confused.
“Because your grandfather firmly believed that major family decisions should never be made by one person acting alone,” she explained softly.
“That sounds completely impractical,” I remarked.
“He was an old-fashioned man who believed in checks and balances,” she noted.
“He was being extremely careful,” I corrected gently.
“Yes, he was,” she agreed quietly.
Those words hung heavily in the air between us.
I suddenly remembered my grandfather’s large, weathered hands in his final years.
