Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Why didn’t you give that letter to me months ago?” I asked, feeling an ache in my heart.
“I tried to give it to you several times,” she replied gently.
Those words echoed in my head like a ghost from our past.
“When did you try to give it to me?” I demanded.
“On the very day we signed our final divorce decree at the county courthouse,” she revealed.
I looked at her, searching my memory.
“You were standing near the marble pillars in the main lobby holding a blue envelope,” I recalled slowly.
The forgotten memory suddenly came back with sharp clarity.
