Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“Why would she mention my mother specifically?” I asked, feeling a growing sense of dread.
Nurse Florence chose not to answer that direct question.
Instead, she simply turned her eyes back toward the wooden door of Room 418.
“What does this key actually open?” I asked again, demanding an answer.
Her clear eyes met mine again with tremendous seriousness.
“It opens a locked trust that your family never expected you to find,” she said plainly.
In that quiet moment outside the hospital room, I realized my entire past had been a lie.
