Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“I’m staying right here in this room,” I said firmly.
Her eyes moved away from me and settled coldly on Sylvia.
“Sylvia, I’m truly sorry for the physical ordeal you’ve been through tonight,” my mother said with practiced sympathy.
Sylvia stayed completely silent, staring back at her without blinking.
My mother went on smoothly, “However, these newborn children are legitimate Montgomery heirs.
Their long-term future and legal protection must be handled properly by the family.”
“They’re also Sylvia’s children,” I reminded my mother sternly.
