Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“And they’re yours as well,” my mother added pointedly.
“This seems to be the first time tonight that you’ve shown any interest in recognizing me as their father,” I said bitterly.
A brief shadow of irritation crossed her calculated expression.
“I’m simply trying to protect this family from a public scandal,” she insisted calmly.
“Protect us from what scandal exactly?” I demanded.
“From a very complicated situation none of us could have predicted,” she explained smoothly.
Sylvia finally spoke from her hospital bed, her voice clear and steady.
