Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Nurse Florence gave a small nod.
“It isn’t an ordinary bank trust account, at least not in the usual sense,” she clarified.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, tightening my grip on the metal.
“It means Sylvia truly believed you would understand everything once you saw what was kept inside,” Florence explained softly.
I glanced back down the empty hallway toward the door of Room 418.
“Did she tell you that herself?” I asked.
