Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“And why did you feel you had to arrange private specialists without telling me?” I asked.
“To make sure the infants got the very best medical care money could buy,” she claimed smoothly.
“Or to make sure your legal team had complete control over where those babies were taken?” I shot back.
Her complete silence was more damning than any spoken admission could have been.
I deliberately placed myself directly between my mother and the two bassinets in the corner.
I didn’t touch anyone or make any physical threat, but I firmly took the space she clearly believed belonged to her legal team.
