Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
My mother’s eyes narrowed into cold slits.
“You’re acting purely out of emotional instability right now, Alexander,” she said judgmentally.
“I’m acting like a father protecting his sons,” I corrected her firmly.
“You’ve known these children exist for less than an hour,” she pointed out coldly.
“That’s still sixty minutes longer than you knew them when you told your lawyers to file a guardianship petition,” I fired back.
The two attorneys exchanged a quick, uneasy look behind her back.
