She Wants to See You
I told Owen Chase. He’s ten now. He sends me a drawing every couple of months, and last summer he sent one that was just me standing on a basketball court by myself with no cape and no children and no fire, and on the back he’d written: this one isn’t about that day.
I keep it on my wall. It’s the only picture of me I like.
Chapter 13 — The Chain
Daniel started looking because Lily asked him not to.
He is aware of what that sounds like. He has since had the conversation with her about it, twice, and neither one went well the first time.
But she had said, nobody will say who gave it to the stringer — and there had been something in the way she said it, some carefulness, that stayed with him through a week of night shifts.
He was not trying to sue anybody. He wanted a name.
