I picked up my keys from the console table, and stepped to the front door, and paused, and looked back at my family.
Julian was sitting on the floor with our daughters, laughing as Maya tried to grab his silk tie, his hands full, his forehead faintly damp, fully and completely engaged in the beautiful, messy, exhausting, un-outsourceable work of raising the lives we had made together.
And I smiled, and I unlocked the front door, and I walked out into the warm morning light, knowing, for the first time since my daughters were born, that I was no longer carrying the world alone.
