The sources do not justify such certainty.

It means his relationship to the site was fundamentally different from theirs.

For the colonists, Plymouth represented a new beginning.

For Tisquantum, Patuxet represented a before and after.

The same fields carried opposite meanings.

This is one reason the phrase “empty land” is so misleading in early colonial history.

A place can be temporarily depopulated and still be someone’s homeland.
