Nobody’s life was different because of it.

Not mine, not Evelyn’s, not my daughters’.

The girls did not get a father because I hung up a telephone.

They got a father because of about nine months of paperwork that I have not heard one person ask a single question about.

I keep that in this account deliberately, and near the front.

Because everybody who hears this story loves that moment, and it is the most useless thing I did that year, and the parts that actually worked were all extremely boring.
