The analysis of Cheddar Man’s genome in 2017 and early 2018 — conducted primarily by Professor Mark Thomas and Dr.
Yoan Diekmann at UCL’s Genetics, Evolution & Environment department, in collaboration with the Natural History Museum team including Selina Brace and Tom Booth — produced a comprehensive picture of the genome of a ten-thousand-year-old British hunter-gatherer.
The researchers extracted the DNA, identified and filtered for the characteristic damage patterns of ancient DNA to eliminate modern contamination, and assembled the fragmentary ancient sequences into a coherent genome.
The result was the most complete genetic portrait of a Mesolithic British individual ever obtained.
