The 11,500-Year-Old Baby Found In Alaska — And The DNA That Revealed A Lost Branch Of The First Americans
The Stone Tools And What They Add
The genome of USR1 is the most globally significant finding from Upward Sun River.
But the stone tools recovered from the site add a different kind of evidence — direct material evidence of the technological practices of the people who lived there.
The tools found in the occupation horizons at Upward Sun River belong to the technological tradition of late Pleistocene and early Holocene interior Alaska.
They include microblades — small, narrow flakes struck from specially prepared cores that were used as inserts in composite tools — and other artifact types characteristic of the Denali Complex, the Beringian archaeological tradition associated with the late Pleistocene populations of the region.
