The Thread That Connects

There is a version of this story that ends with the Science paper — with the publication of the findings, the resolution of the morphological puzzle, and the entry of Naia’s haplogroup into the permanent scientific record.

That version is accurate as far as it goes, but it leaves out the most important dimension of what the discovery represents.

The thread that connects Naia to the living peoples of the Americas — to the Maya of the Yucatán, to the Indigenous nations of Central and North America, to the hundreds of distinct communities that carry within their cultures and their languages and their ecological knowledge the accumulated inheritance of twelve thousand years of human life in this hemisphere — is not a genetic thread alone.
