Phil Orr did not arrive at Arlington Canyon in 1959 as a naive discoverer stumbling onto an unexpected find.

He was a seasoned researcher with decades of experience studying exactly the kinds of geological and archaeological contexts that the Arlington Springs site represented.

Orr had joined the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in the late 1930s and built his career around the Channel Islands.

He was trained in archaeology, paleontology, and the physical geology that underpinned both — the kind of broad naturalist preparation that characterized mid-century scholars who might today be split into multiple narrower specialties.
