The wonder is that we exist at all — that the specific chain of geological events that produced the current Earth surface, the specific biological events that led from the first cells to the first animals to the first mammals to the first primates to us, the specific evolutionary events that produced the distinct communities of the tepui summits, the specific cultural events that produced the Pemón traditions and the Victorian adventure novel and the modern science of phylogeography — all of this happened, on a planet orbiting a fairly ordinary star in a fairly ordinary galaxy, and produced among its many outputs the specific combination of curiosity and cognitive capacity that allows us to stand on two-billion-year-old rock and wonder about where it came from.
