The Heliamphora pitcher plant, evolving carnivory in response to nutrient poverty, is doing what life does when the conventional solution fails: finding a non-conventional one.

These are not isolated curiosities.

They are demonstrations, in a particularly clear form, of the principles that explain all of life’s diversity.

The geological processes that produced Roraima’s cliffs — erosion operating on resistant ancient rock over geological time — are the same processes that produce all of Earth’s landforms.

The two-billion-year age of the rocks is a specific expression of the general truth that Earth is far older than human civilization, that the surface we live on is the current state of processes operating across timescales incomprehensible to unaided intuition.

And the meaning that the Pemón and their ancestors have found in this mountain — the cultural significance embedded in the landscape, the stories and practices and understandings that have developed over generations of living near and below the tepuis — is a reminder that the significance of a place is not only what science can measure, and that the knowledge traditions of Indigenous peoples who have lived with a landscape for centuries contain dimensions of understanding that Western scientific frameworks do not encompass.
