The Research That Continues

The Mal’ta-Buret’ cultural horizon continues to be an active area of research, and the questions opened by the MA-1 genome continue to drive new investigations.

Additional ancient DNA samples from individuals associated with the Mal’ta-Buret’ cultural complex, and from contemporaneous and slightly later sites across the Lake Baikal region, have been and continue to be analyzed.

These analyses help to characterize the genetic diversity within the population that MA-1 represented and to track how that population’s genetic heritage evolved over time as the Last Glacial Maximum ended and post-glacial conditions developed.
