After everything the Ice Maiden’s burial has revealed — the material world of the Pazyryk, the evidence of her physical characteristics, the clues about her possible social role, the demonstration of long-distance trade — some questions remain that the evidence cannot answer.

We do not know her name.

We do not know whether she had children, whether she was married or partnered, whether she had siblings or parents who survived her.

We do not know what she believed — not in the specific sense of what practices she engaged in, but in the deeper sense of what she understood the world to be and what she thought happened after death.
