It rests on comparative ethnographic evidence from much later and from different cultures.

It cannot be confirmed from the Ice Maiden’s burial alone.

But it is a reminder that the categories through which we interpret illness — as purely physical misfortune, as disability, as diminishment — are culturally specific.

The Ice Maiden’s community may have understood her suffering in a framework that gave it meaning rather than simply pain.
