The formal Silk Road — the network of overland trade routes connecting China with Central Asia and the Mediterranean — is conventionally dated to the second century B.C.E., when the Han dynasty diplomat Zhang Qian traveled to Central Asia and opened formal diplomatic and commercial relationships.
But the Chinese silk on the Ukok Plateau demonstrates that the movement of Chinese goods westward along the steppe routes predated the formal Silk Road by centuries.
